George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father was Augustine Washington and his mother was Mary Ball Washington. Although he had no formal education, he was very well read. He has come to be revered as “The Father of Our Country.” Mr. Washington served two terms as our nation’s 1st President from April 30, 1789 to March 3, 1797. He declined to serve a third term.

General Washington was a planter and a military man. Under his great leadership, the brave soldiers of the American Revolution were able to defeat the mighty army of King George III of England and win total independence for their newly created country… The United States of America.

George Washington married widow Martha Dandridge Custis in 1759. Martha had two young children whom George adopted.  Their names were John and Martha. He believed that shaking hands was undignified for a President. He preferred to bow to his guests instead. Mr. Washington’s false teeth were not made of wood. He was our only President who did not serve his term of office in Washington, D.C., which, of course, is named in his honor. In his time, the capital of our nation was Philadelphia.

President George Washington died on December 14, 1799 at his home, Mount Vernon, in Virginia. He was 67. The nation deeply mourned his passing for a very long time afterward.
