John Tyler was born on March 29, 1790 in Greenway, Virginia.
His father was John Tyler and his mother was Mary Marot
Armistead Tyler. He was a graduate of The College of William
& Mary. Although he never ran for President, he served as
our 10th President from April 6, 1841 to March 3,
1845.
Mr. Tyler was a lawyer. Because he became our President by way
of the untimely death of President William Henry Harrison, his
detractors disparagingly referred to him as “His Accidency”
or “The Accidental President.” He served as a member of
the Virginia House of Delegates, the U.S. House of
Representatives and the Virginia State Legislature. He was
also Governor of Virginia, U.S. Senator and U.S.
Vice-President.
John Tyler married Letitia Christian in 1813. They had eight
children: Mary, Robert, John, Letitia, Elizabeth, Anne, Alice
and Tazewell. His wife, Letitia, died in 1842.
In 1844, he married Julia Gardiner. Together, they had
seven children: David, John, Julia, Lachlan, Lyon, Robert and
Pearl. Mr. Tyler was the first Vice-President to become
President because of the death of his predecessor. He may have
taken a lesson from the misfortune of Mr. Harrison, because he
never delivered an inaugural address.
President John Tyler died on January 18, 1862 in Richmond,
Virginia. At the time of his death, he was serving as a member
of the Confederate House of Representatives. |
