Stephen Grover Cleveland was born on March 18, 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey. His father was Richard Falley Cleveland and his mother was Anne Neal Cleveland. He received no formal education. Mr. Cleveland holds the distinction of being our only President to serve two non-consecutive terms of office. He was our nation’s 22nd President from March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1889 and our 24th President from March 4, 1893 to March 3, 1897.

Mr. Cleveland was a lawyer. He served as Sheriff of Erie County, New York and was later elected Mayor of Buffalo, New York. He also served as Governor of the State of New York. While Mr. Cleveland was Sheriff of Erie County, he also served as the Public Executioner. He personally hanged two murderers. During his terms as President, Mr. Cleveland used to answer The White House telephones personally. He was an avid hunter and his favorite rifle was nicknamed: “Death and Destruction.”

Grover Cleveland was our only President to be married while serving in office. In 1886, the 49 year-old President married 21 year-old Frances Folsom in a ceremony held at The White House. They had five children: Ruth (after whom the “Baby Ruth” candy bar is named), Esther (the only President’s child to be born in The White House), Marion, Richard and Francis.

President Grover Cleveland died on June 24, 1908 in Princeton, New Jersey. He was 71 years of age.
