Harry S Truman was born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri. His father was John Anderson Truman and his mother was Martha Ellen Young Truman. His parents couldn’t agree on a middle name, so they just settled for the letter “S”. He went to the University of Kansas City Law School. After the death of Franklin Roosevelt, from a cerebral hemorrhage, Mr. Truman was sworn in as our nation’s 33rd President. He served until January 20, 1953.

Mr. Truman was a farmer, then a public official. He served as an army Captain in World War I and, at war’s end, he returned to Kansas City to open a haberdashery (men’s clothing store). He was a Jackson County Court Judge. He went on to serve as a U.S. Senator and, in 1944, was elected Vice-President. After he became President, he finally learned about “The Manhattan Project” - the development of the first atomic bomb. Germany surrendered within two months of Truman’s coming to office, but Japan refused peace. On August 6, 1945, Mr. Truman ordered the first A-Bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Three days later, another was detonated over Nagasaki. Japan finally gave up. Peace, however, would be short-lived. The Korean War began in 1950.

Harry S Truman married Elizabeth “Bess” Virginia Wallace in 1919. They had one daughter: Mary Margaret.

President Harry S Truman died on December 26, 1972 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was 88 years of age.
