Dwight David Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890 in Denison, Texas. His father was David Jacob Eisenhower and his mother was Ida Elizabeth Stover Eisenhower. In 1915, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. After a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, he served as our nation’s 34th President from January 20, 1953 to January 20, 1961.

Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower was a military genius and a great American hero. In the early days of World War II, America was not doing well in its fight against Hitler’s Nazi Germany. General Eisenhower was ordered to command an invasion against the German forces that occupied North Africa. The invasion was a stunning success and began to turn the tide in favor of the U.S. and her allies. Later, on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), Ike, as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces, oversaw the invasion of Normandy, France. This invasion, the largest such operation in the history of warfare, spelled the beginning of the end for the Nazis. Victory in Europe came on May 8, 1945, when Germany surrendered.

General Eisenhower married Mary “Mamie” Geneva Doud in 1916. They had two sons: Doud (1917-1921) and John. As President, Mr. Eisenhower ended the Korean War and led America to new heights of prosperity. He was an avid golfer and had his own personal putting green installed at The White House.

President Dwight Eisenhower died on March 28, 1969.
