Richard Nixon was a lawyer. He served as Attorney for the U.S. Office of Emergency Management and as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy during World War II. After the war, Mr. Nixon was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and later to the U.S. Senate. In 1952, he was Eisenhower’s running mate. He served as Vice-President from 1953 to 1961. In 1960, he was defeated in the Presidential election and returned to California. He ran for Governor of California in 1962, but lost that election as well. Many people considered his political career to be over, but not Mr. Nixon. He mounted a strong comeback and was elected President in 1968. In 1972, several employees of his re-election committee were arrested for burglarizing the Democratic Party’s offices. This became known as “The Watergate Scandal” and led to Nixon’s resignation. He is the only President to have resigned.

Richard Nixon married Thelma “Pat” Catherine Ryan in 1942. They had two daughters: Patricia (“Tricia”) and Julie.

President Richard Nixon died on April 22, 1994 in New York, New York. He was 81 years old.
